Bed Bugs in Michigan: How to Identify, Prevent, and Eliminate Bed Bug Infestations

July 30, 2026

Learn how to identify bed bugs, recognize the signs of an infestation, prevent them from spreading, and understand why professional bed bug treatment is the most effective way to protect your Michigan home or business.

Bed Bugs Are Making a Comeback Across Michigan

If you think bed bugs are only found in dirty homes or low-quality hotels, think again.

Bed bugs can be found in homes, apartments, hotels, offices, schools, healthcare facilities, retail stores, and public transportation throughout Michigan.

Because bed bugs hitchhike from place to place on luggage, furniture, backpacks, clothing, and personal belongings, anyone can unknowingly bring them home.

The good news is that bed bugs are treatable. The key is catching an infestation early before it spreads throughout your property.

What Are Bed Bugs?

Bed bugs are small, reddish-brown insects that feed exclusively on the blood of humans and other warm-blooded animals.

Adult bed bugs are approximately the size of an apple seed and are excellent at hiding in tiny cracks and crevices during the day. At night, they emerge to feed before returning to their hiding places.

Unlike fleas, bed bugs cannot jump.

Unlike termites, they do not damage wood.

Unlike cockroaches, they are not attracted to food or garbage.

Their only goal is finding a blood meal.

How Do Bed Bugs Get Into Your Home or Business?

One of the biggest misconceptions about bed bugs is that they appear because a property is dirty.

In reality, cleanliness has very little to do with a bed bug infestation.

Common ways bed bugs spread include:

  • Hotel stays
  • Vacation rentals
  • College dormitories
  • Air travel
  • Movie theaters
  • Public transportation
  • Used mattresses
  • Secondhand furniture
  • Office chairs
  • Employee break rooms
  • Visitors bringing them into your home
  • Shared laundry facilities

Businesses are also at risk, especially:

  • Hotels
  • Apartment complexes
  • Healthcare facilities
  • Nursing homes
  • Schools
  • Office buildings
  • Retail stores

Signs You May Have Bed Bugs

Many homeowners don't realize they have bed bugs until the population has grown significantly.

Common warning signs include:

  • Small red bites appearing overnight
  • Blood spots on sheets
  • Tiny black fecal stains on mattresses
  • Shed bed bug skins
  • Small white eggs in mattress seams
  • Live bed bugs hiding around beds or furniture
  • Musty odor during heavy infestations

Bed bugs commonly hide in:

  • Mattress seams
  • Box springs
  • Bed frames
  • Headboards
  • Nightstands
  • Upholstered furniture
  • Electrical outlets
  • Baseboards
  • Behind picture frames
  • Inside couches and recliners

Why DIY Bed Bug Treatments Often Fail

Many over-the-counter sprays only kill bed bugs they come into direct contact with.

Unfortunately, bed bugs are experts at hiding inside:

  • Walls
  • Furniture
  • Bed frames
  • Floor joints
  • Electronics
  • Baseboards

Even worse, eggs often survive DIY treatments.

Within a few weeks, new bed bugs hatch and the infestation starts all over again.

Many homeowners unknowingly spread bed bugs to additional rooms while attempting to treat them themselves.

Why Professional Bed Bug Treatment Works Better

Professional treatment focuses on eliminating every stage of the bed bug life cycle.

A comprehensive treatment typically includes:

  • Thorough inspection
  • Identification of hiding locations
  • Targeted crack and crevice applications
  • Treatment of furniture
  • Monitoring activity
  • Follow-up inspections when necessary

Professional products are designed to reach areas that over-the-counter products often miss, helping eliminate both active bed bugs and newly emerging insects.

Can Bed Bugs Spread Throughout a Building?

Absolutely.

Bed bugs can travel between:

  • Apartments
  • Condominiums
  • Duplexes
  • Hotels
  • Offices
  • Healthcare facilities
  • Multi-unit commercial buildings

Early intervention can significantly reduce the likelihood of an infestation spreading to neighboring units or additional rooms.

How to Prevent Bed Bugs

While no prevention method is perfect, these habits can greatly reduce your risk:

While Traveling

  • Inspect hotel mattresses.
  • Keep luggage off beds.
  • Check headboards.
  • Wash clothing immediately after returning home.
  • Dry clothes on high heat.

At Home

  • Inspect secondhand furniture.
  • Vacuum regularly.
  • Reduce clutter around sleeping areas.
  • Use mattress encasements.
  • Inspect after overnight guests.

For Businesses

Businesses should consider regular inspections if they operate:

  • Hotels
  • Healthcare facilities
  • Senior living communities
  • Apartment complexes
  • Student housing
  • Corporate housing

Routine inspections help identify problems before they become widespread.

Why Fast Action Matters

A small bed bug problem can quickly become a large infestation.

Female bed bugs lay multiple eggs throughout their lives, allowing populations to grow rapidly when left untreated.

The sooner treatment begins, the easier and less disruptive the process typically is.

At Anteater Pest Control , we get a lot of questions about a specific, red-and-black insect that seems to appear out of nowhere in massive clusters. If you’ve seen these bugs congregating on your siding or windowsills, you’re likely dealing with Boxelder bugs. While they aren’t the most destructive pests we deal with, their presence in large numbers can be a major nuisance. Here is everything you need to know about identifying, managing, and preventing Boxelder bugs. Identification: Is it a Boxelder Bug? Before you take action, you have to know what you’re looking at. Boxelder bugs (Boisea trivittata) are easily identified by a few key features: Color : Dark brownish-black with three distinct reddish-orange stripes on the thorax (the area behind the head). Shape : An elongated, flattened oval shape, roughly 1/2 inch long. Wings : They have overlapping wings that form a distinct "X" shape on their backs. Why Are They Choosing Your Home? Boxelder bugs are highly attracted to heat and light. They are often found on the south and west-facing walls of buildings because those surfaces absorb the most sunlight. Their primary food source is the seed of the Boxelder tree, though they also frequent Maple and Ash trees. If you have these trees on or near your property, your home is essentially a "luxury resort" for them—providing food nearby and a warm place to rest. The "Nuisance" Factor The good news? Boxelder bugs do not bite, they don’t sting, and they don’t carry diseases. They also won't eat your food or damage your furniture. However, they present two main problems: Staining : If crushed, their body fluids can leave a permanent reddish-orange stain on curtains, carpets, and upholstery. Odors : When threatened or squashed, they release a pungent, foul-smelling defensive odor. Professional Solutions When Boxelder bugs move from a few sightings to a full-scale invasion, DIY methods often fall short. Because these bugs can hide deep within wall voids, professional intervention is the most reliable way to create a lasting perimeter barrier. At Anteater Pest Control, we use targeted treatments to stop these pests before they find their way into your living space. We don't just treat the symptoms; we help you identify the entry points to keep your home secure. Is your home becoming a hangout for Boxelder bugs?
