Tick Control in Michigan: Why More Homeowners Are Seeing Ticks in Their Yards

May 18, 2026

Ticks have become one of the fastest-growing pest concerns for homeowners across Michigan.

Whether you’re in Oakland County, Wayne County, Macomb County, Livingston County, or Ingham County, tick sightings in residential yards, wooded edges, and even suburban lawns are becoming increasingly common.

Ticks are more than just a nuisance—they can carry diseases such as Lyme disease, making prevention an important part of seasonal property maintenance.

At Anteater Pest Control, we help homeowners throughout Southeast Michigan and Mid-Michigan reduce tick populations with targeted exterior treatments designed for local environments.

Why Ticks Are Spreading in Michigan

Ticks thrive in environments that are extremely common across Michigan:

  • Wooded property lines
  • Tall grass and brush
  • Mulch beds and landscaping edges
  • Moist, shaded areas
  • Transitional zones between lawns and forests

As suburban development expands into wooded areas across Livingston County, Oakland County, and Ingham County, tick habitats are increasingly overlapping with residential properties.

Even homes that are well-maintained can experience tick activity if they border natural areas.

Where Ticks Are Most Common Around Homes

Ticks are rarely found in open sunny areas. Instead, they hide in:

  • Overgrown grass
  • Bushes and shrubs
  • Wood piles and debris areas
  • Fence lines
  • Shaded landscaping beds
  • Yard edges near woods or fields

Pets are often the first sign of a tick problem, especially dogs that spend time near wooded edges.

Why Tick Control Matters

Ticks can carry bacteria that cause Lyme disease and other illnesses. While not every tick is infected, the risk increases in areas where populations are high.

Many homeowners in Southeast Michigan and Mid-Michigan are now taking preventive steps before peak summer activity begins.

Professional Tick Control Treatments

Effective tick control targets the areas where ticks live and travel, including:

  • Yard perimeters
  • Wooded edges
  • Tall grass zones
  • Landscaping beds
  • Fence lines and shaded areas

Treatments are designed to reduce tick populations and create a protective barrier around your home and yard.

Tick Control Across Southeast & Mid-Michigan

We provide tick control services throughout:

  • Oakland County (Troy, Rochester Hills, Waterford, etc.)
  • Wayne County (Canton, Livonia, Westland, etc.)
  • Macomb County (Shelby Township, Warren, Clinton Township, etc.)
  • Livingston County (Brighton, Howell, Hartland, etc.)
  • Ingham County (Lansing, East Lansing, Okemos, Haslett)
  • Surrounding Mid-Michigan and Southeast Michigan communities

Pets, Kids, and Outdoor Safety

Ticks are especially concerning for:

  • Dogs and outdoor pets
  • Children playing in yards
  • Homeowners near wooded areas
  • Properties with tall grass or natural borders

Reducing tick populations helps lower the chance of bites during peak outdoor season.

Mosquitoes are getting worse every year in Michigan, you’re not imagining it.
March 23, 2026
At Anteater Pest Control , we get a lot of questions about a specific, red-and-black insect that seems to appear out of nowhere in massive clusters. If you’ve seen these bugs congregating on your siding or windowsills, you’re likely dealing with Boxelder bugs. While they aren’t the most destructive pests we deal with, their presence in large numbers can be a major nuisance. Here is everything you need to know about identifying, managing, and preventing Boxelder bugs. Identification: Is it a Boxelder Bug? Before you take action, you have to know what you’re looking at. Boxelder bugs (Boisea trivittata) are easily identified by a few key features: Color : Dark brownish-black with three distinct reddish-orange stripes on the thorax (the area behind the head). Shape : An elongated, flattened oval shape, roughly 1/2 inch long. Wings : They have overlapping wings that form a distinct "X" shape on their backs. Why Are They Choosing Your Home? Boxelder bugs are highly attracted to heat and light. They are often found on the south and west-facing walls of buildings because those surfaces absorb the most sunlight. Their primary food source is the seed of the Boxelder tree, though they also frequent Maple and Ash trees. If you have these trees on or near your property, your home is essentially a "luxury resort" for them—providing food nearby and a warm place to rest. The "Nuisance" Factor The good news? Boxelder bugs do not bite, they don’t sting, and they don’t carry diseases. They also won't eat your food or damage your furniture. However, they present two main problems: Staining : If crushed, their body fluids can leave a permanent reddish-orange stain on curtains, carpets, and upholstery. Odors : When threatened or squashed, they release a pungent, foul-smelling defensive odor. Professional Solutions When Boxelder bugs move from a few sightings to a full-scale invasion, DIY methods often fall short. Because these bugs can hide deep within wall voids, professional intervention is the most reliable way to create a lasting perimeter barrier. At Anteater Pest Control, we use targeted treatments to stop these pests before they find their way into your living space. We don't just treat the symptoms; we help you identify the entry points to keep your home secure. Is your home becoming a hangout for Boxelder bugs?
