Carpenter Ants in Michigan: Signs You May Have a Hidden Infestation

May 20, 2026

Carpenter ants are one of the most common pest issues homeowners deal with in Michigan, and they are often misunderstood.

Throughout Southeast Michigan and Mid-Michigan, including Oakland County, Wayne County, Macomb County, Livingston County, and Ingham County, carpenter ant activity tends to increase in the spring and early summer. Many homeowners first notice them when they start showing up inside near kitchens, bathrooms, or windows.

At Anteater Pest Control, we regularly help homeowners identify and eliminate carpenter ant problems before they become more serious.

What Are Carpenter Ants?

Carpenter ants are large ants, most commonly black, though some may have reddish coloring. They tunnel through wood to create nesting galleries.

Unlike termites, carpenter ants do not eat wood. They remove it to build their nests.

Even so, they can still cause damage over time by weakening wood structures, especially if the infestation continues unchecked.

Why Carpenter Ants Are Common in Michigan

Michigan provides ideal conditions for carpenter ants. Moisture, wooded areas, and older homes all play a role.

You are more likely to see carpenter ants if your property has:

  • Mature trees or wooded surroundings
  • Damp or decaying wood
  • Poor drainage or moisture issues
  • Landscaping that stays shaded and humid

Homes in Livingston County, Macomb County, Oakland County, and Ingham County are especially prone, particularly those near wooded lots or with dense landscaping.

Signs You May Have Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants often stay hidden, so early signs can be easy to miss.

Here are the most common things homeowners notice:

Large Ants Indoors

Seeing large black ants inside your home, especially more than once, is often the first sign.

Small Piles of Sawdust

Carpenter ants push wood shavings out of their nests. These piles, called frass, are usually found near baseboards, windows, or entry points.

Activity at Night

Carpenter ants are more active after dark, so you may notice increased movement in the evening.

Faint Sounds in Walls

In some cases, people hear light rustling or movement inside walls where ants are nesting.

Where Carpenter Ants Nest

Carpenter ants prefer damp wood, but they can expand into dry areas as the colony grows.

Common nesting locations include:

  • Wall voids
  • Window and door frames
  • Attics
  • Crawl spaces
  • Decks and porches
  • Tree stumps or firewood near the home

It is also common to have a main colony outside and smaller satellite colonies inside the house.

Why DIY Treatments Often Do Not Work

Store-bought sprays and ant baits usually only affect the ants you see.

Carpenter ant colonies are often hidden and can be spread out across multiple areas. Without locating and treating the source, the problem usually continues.

In some cases, improper treatment can cause the colony to split and spread further.

Professional Carpenter Ant Treatment

Effective carpenter ant control starts with identifying where the ants are nesting and how they are entering the home.

Treatment typically includes:

  • Targeting active nesting areas
  • Eliminating satellite colonies
  • Treating entry points and exterior zones
  • Creating a barrier around the home

At Anteater Pest Control, treatments are tailored to each property to make sure the infestation is handled completely, not just temporarily reduced.

Do Not Ignore the Signs

Carpenter ants are often brushed off as a minor issue, but repeated sightings inside the home usually mean there is a nest nearby.

Addressing the problem early makes it much easier to eliminate and helps prevent further damage.

Mosquitoes are getting worse every year in Michigan, you’re not imagining it.
March 23, 2026
At Anteater Pest Control , we get a lot of questions about a specific, red-and-black insect that seems to appear out of nowhere in massive clusters. If you’ve seen these bugs congregating on your siding or windowsills, you’re likely dealing with Boxelder bugs. While they aren’t the most destructive pests we deal with, their presence in large numbers can be a major nuisance. Here is everything you need to know about identifying, managing, and preventing Boxelder bugs. Identification: Is it a Boxelder Bug? Before you take action, you have to know what you’re looking at. Boxelder bugs (Boisea trivittata) are easily identified by a few key features: Color : Dark brownish-black with three distinct reddish-orange stripes on the thorax (the area behind the head). Shape : An elongated, flattened oval shape, roughly 1/2 inch long. Wings : They have overlapping wings that form a distinct "X" shape on their backs. Why Are They Choosing Your Home? Boxelder bugs are highly attracted to heat and light. They are often found on the south and west-facing walls of buildings because those surfaces absorb the most sunlight. Their primary food source is the seed of the Boxelder tree, though they also frequent Maple and Ash trees. If you have these trees on or near your property, your home is essentially a "luxury resort" for them—providing food nearby and a warm place to rest. The "Nuisance" Factor The good news? Boxelder bugs do not bite, they don’t sting, and they don’t carry diseases. They also won't eat your food or damage your furniture. However, they present two main problems: Staining : If crushed, their body fluids can leave a permanent reddish-orange stain on curtains, carpets, and upholstery. Odors : When threatened or squashed, they release a pungent, foul-smelling defensive odor. Professional Solutions When Boxelder bugs move from a few sightings to a full-scale invasion, DIY methods often fall short. Because these bugs can hide deep within wall voids, professional intervention is the most reliable way to create a lasting perimeter barrier. At Anteater Pest Control, we use targeted treatments to stop these pests before they find their way into your living space. We don't just treat the symptoms; we help you identify the entry points to keep your home secure. Is your home becoming a hangout for Boxelder bugs?
